How to choose the right braai

Decide first where the braai lives. A built-in braai becomes part of the patio or entertainment area and needs a flue through the roof or wall. A free-standing patio braai on a cabinet gives you the same cooking area without building work. Gas braais light instantly and suit weeknight cooking, while combo braais give you wood and gas in one unit.

Material matters near the coast. Mild steel braais are the most affordable and perform well under cover inland. In coastal suburbs like Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, Hout Bay and Langebaan, choose stainless steel: 430 grade for covered patios and 304 marine grade where salt air reaches the braai.

Size the grid to your crowd. An 800 mm braai cooks for a family, 1000–1200 mm for regular entertaining and 1500 mm for large gatherings. Prices on this site start at R5,963 for gas braais, R7,530 for mild-steel built-in braais, R11,498 for stainless steel and R15,044 for combo braais. Most built-in units include a 2.4 m flue kit.

Standard single-storey braai installation in Cape Town is R5,500 incl. VAT, and a canopy or extractor fan can be added for enclosed areas. We install within 200 km of Cape Town — the City, Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast — and courier anywhere in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Mild steel or stainless steel braai?

Mild steel is the budget choice for covered, inland patios. Choose 430 stainless for covered coastal areas and 304 marine-grade stainless where salt spray reaches the braai.

Do built-in braais include a flue?

Most Lava Fires built-in braais on this site include a 2.4 m flue kit and cowl. The product page lists exactly what is included.

What size braai should I buy?

800 mm suits a family, 1000–1200 mm suits regular entertaining and 1500 mm is for large gatherings. Measure the opening before ordering a built-in model.

How much does installation cost?

Standard single-storey fireplace or braai installation inside Cape Town is R5,500 incl. VAT, and double-storey installation is R8,000. Travel is added beyond Cape Town, and outside our 200 km install area we courier the unit to you.
