Choosing a closed combustion fireplace

A closed combustion fireplace burns wood behind a sealed glass door, with air controls that slow the burn. The result is far more heat from far less wood than an open fireplace — typically 70–80% efficiency — and a clean glass view of the flame. It is the most popular way to heat a Cape Town home in winter.

Size by floor area: allow roughly 1 kW per 10 m². A 7–10 kW stove heats a typical lounge or open-plan area of 70–100 m², while 12–15 kW suits larger double-volume spaces. Check whether you want a top or rear flue exit, a log store, or a cooking plate on top.

Prices on this site start at R10,448 incl. VAT, and complete packages such as the Magma fireplace with flue kit are available. We match the flue to the stove automatically: 130 mm for 10 kW and smaller, 150 mm for 11–15 kW and 180 mm for 16–18 kW. Single-storey installation in Cape Town is R5,500 and double-storey R8,000.

Installations follow SANS 10400 Part V: a non-combustible hearth, correct clearances to walls and furniture, and a flue that finishes at least 1 m above the roof. We install within 200 km of Cape Town — the City, Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast — and courier anywhere in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

How efficient is a closed combustion fireplace?

Typically 70–80%, compared with 10–20% for an open fireplace, so you burn much less wood for the same warmth.

What kW closed combustion fireplace do I need?

About 1 kW per 10 m². A 10 kW unit suits 80–100 m²; choose 12–15 kW for large or double-volume rooms.

How much does installation cost?

Standard single-storey fireplace or braai installation inside Cape Town is R5,500 incl. VAT, and double-storey installation is R8,000. Travel is added beyond Cape Town, and outside our 200 km install area we courier the unit to you.

Is your fireplace installation SANS 10400 compliant?

Yes. Every wood and pellet fireplace we install follows SANS 10400 Part V — correct hearth size, clearances to combustibles, flue height above the roof line and a sealed roof penetration. You receive a certificate of compliance for your insurer.

Do you deliver outside Cape Town?

Yes. We install within 200 km of Cape Town and courier anywhere in South Africa. Stock items usually leave our Bellville showroom within days; allow about two weeks if a model is not in stock.
