Is an open fireplace right for you?

An open fireplace gives the traditional crackle and smell of a wood fire with nothing between you and the flame. It is the most affordable fireplace to buy and suits homes where the fire is lit for atmosphere a few nights a winter rather than as the main heater.

The trade-off is efficiency: open fires send most of their heat up the chimney, so they warm the area right in front of them rather than the whole room. If you want to heat an open-plan space, compare our closed combustion fireplaces, which burn far less wood.

Open fireplaces need a correctly sized flue and a good draw. Make sure the room has enough fresh air — a sealed modern room can starve an open fire and push smoke back inside. Use dry, seasoned hardwood such as rooikrans or blue gum, and have the flue swept once a year.

Open fireplaces on this site start at R6,295 incl. VAT. Standard single-storey installation in Cape Town is R5,500 and follows SANS 10400 Part V for hearth size, clearances and flue height. We install within 200 km of Cape Town — the City, Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast — and courier anywhere in South Africa.

Before ordering, measure the space and check what sits above the fireplace position, such as beams or a ceiling void.

Progress Group has supplied and installed fireplaces, braais and heating in the Western Cape since 1990. Visit our Bellville showroom to see units in person, or send us photos and measurements of your space for a free written quote. We confirm stock, delivery dates and every installation cost before you pay, so there are no surprises on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Do open fireplaces heat a room well?

They warm the area in front of the fire but lose most heat up the chimney. For whole-room heating, choose closed combustion.

Why does my open fireplace smoke?

Usually wet wood, a flue that is too short or too narrow, or a room without enough fresh air. We size the flue to prevent this.

How much does installation cost?

Standard single-storey fireplace or braai installation inside Cape Town is R5,500 incl. VAT, and double-storey installation is R8,000. Travel is added beyond Cape Town, and outside our 200 km install area we courier the unit to you.

Is your fireplace installation SANS 10400 compliant?

Yes. Every wood and pellet fireplace we install follows SANS 10400 Part V — correct hearth size, clearances to combustibles, flue height above the roof line and a sealed roof penetration. You receive a certificate of compliance for your insurer.
