Outdoor fire features are about gathering. A boma fire pit or fire slab is the centre of a boma or lapa; a wood-fired pizza oven turns the patio into an outdoor kitchen; a patio fireplace brings indoor-style warmth to a covered stoep. Decide how you will use the space most often before choosing the feature.

Placement and safety come first. Keep open fire pits at least 3 m from thatch, timber decking, trees and boundary walls, and never use an open bowl directly under a low roof. Under covered lapas, choose an enclosed or smokeless design and check clearances with us first. Use dry hardwood or charcoal — wet wood smokes, especially in the Cape winter.

Size the pit to the seating. A 730 mm boma pit suits four to six people, 900 mm about eight and 1100 mm a large circle. On this site, Bluestone boma fire slabs start at R7,722 incl. VAT, and fire pit and slab packages include potjie hooks. Grids and ash catchers are optional extras.

Pizza ovens need a solid, level base and a flue that clears any roof above. Most outdoor products are delivered and set up rather than built in.
