Choosing an insert or built-in fireplace

An insert fireplace slides into an existing masonry fireplace opening and turns an inefficient open hearth into a closed combustion heater. A built-in fireplace is framed into a new feature wall or cladding for a clean, flush look — popular in renovations and new builds.

Measure carefully. For an insert, we need the opening's width, height and depth at the front and back, plus the chimney's condition. For a built-in, the surround must be built from non-combustible board with the ventilation and clearances the manufacturer specifies. Many inserts can be fitted with a fan to push warm air into the room.

Insert and built-in fireplaces on this site start at R23,846 incl. VAT. We usually line the existing chimney with a stainless steel flue of the correct diameter so the insert draws properly and the old chimney stays clean.

All installations follow SANS 10400 Part V, and standard single-storey installation in Cape Town is R5,500, with double-storey at R8,000. We install within 200 km of Cape Town — the City, Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast — and courier anywhere in South Africa.

Before ordering, send us photos of the existing fireplace, the chimney from outside and the roof above it. If the chimney needs repair or sweeping, we include that in the quote so the insert can be fitted in one visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can an insert go into my existing fireplace?

Usually yes, if the opening is big enough and the chimney is sound. Send us the opening's width, height and depth for a check.

Does an insert need a new flue?

We normally line the old chimney with a stainless steel flue of the right diameter so the insert draws properly.

How much does installation cost?

Standard single-storey fireplace or braai installation inside Cape Town is R5,500 incl. VAT, and double-storey installation is R8,000. Travel is added beyond Cape Town, and outside our 200 km install area we courier the unit to you.

Is your fireplace installation SANS 10400 compliant?

Yes. Every wood and pellet fireplace we install follows SANS 10400 Part V — correct hearth size, clearances to combustibles, flue height above the roof line and a sealed roof penetration. You receive a certificate of compliance for your insurer.
