Good lighting works in layers. Ambient light from ceiling fittings or downlights fills the room, task light from pendants, reading lights and under-cabinet strips lets you cook and read, and accent light from wall fittings, picture lights and spots adds depth. Plan all three before choosing individual fittings.

Size statement pieces to the space. A simple rule for a chandelier or pendant cluster: add the room's length and width in metres and use that number in centimetres as the fitting's diameter — a 4 × 5 m dining room suits a fitting around 90 cm across. Hang it 75–85 cm above a dining table, and allow at least 2.1 m clearance in walkways.

Choose LED wherever you can. LED downlights and bulbs use a fraction of the power of halogen and last for years. Check the colour temperature: 2700–3000 K is warm and suits living areas, 4000 K is cool white for kitchens, garages and workspaces. Outdoor fittings should be IP44 or higher, and IP65 near pools or on exposed walls along the coast.
