Your fireware is crafted to last. A little regular care protects the finish, preserves performance and lets it age gracefully season after season.
On first use it is important to cure your fire feature slowly. Start with a small, gentle fire and increase the heat gradually over a few sessions. This lets the clay adjust naturally and strengthens the structure over time — avoid exposing it to extreme heat straight away.
Once completely cool, remove ash with a soft brush or scoop. Never use water on hot surfaces, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that damage the natural finish. A simple dry clean is usually all it takes.
Although your piece is water-resistant, prolonged exposure to heavy rain and standing water should be avoided. Use a fitted protective cover when the fire feature is not in use for extended periods, especially through the wet Cape winter.
After each use, let grids and metal parts cool fully before cleaning. Wash off food residue, dry thoroughly, then apply a light coat of cooking oil to prevent rust and extend their lifespan.
Hairline surface cracks may appear over time from heat expansion. This is a normal characteristic of kiln-fired clay and does not affect performance. If you notice deeper cracking or structural concerns, contact us for an assessment.
If the fire feature will stand unused for a long period, make sure it is clean, dry and covered. Check occasionally for debris or moisture build-up, particularly after heavy rain.
