Choosing and installing an aircon in Cape Town
Most homes need an inverter wall split: the indoor unit sits high on a wall and the outdoor condenser goes on a bracket or slab outside. Inverter units adjust their speed instead of switching on and off, which uses noticeably less electricity and keeps the room at a steady temperature in summer and winter.
Size by room area and exposure. As a rough guide, 9,000 BTU suits a bedroom up to about 15 m², 12,000 BTU up to 25 m², 18,000 BTU up to 35 m² and 24,000 BTU up to 50 m². West-facing rooms, top floors and large windows need the next size up. Offices, shops and restaurants usually need cassette, ducted or multi-split systems, and large buildings use VRF.
Standard wall split installation is R5,250 incl. VAT and includes a mounting bracket and a 3 m aluminium piping kit. Longer pipe runs, core drilling, condensate pumps and work at height are quoted separately after we see the site. Commercial installations are quoted per indoor unit.
