Going gas: what to know before you buy

Gas gives instant heat and flame with no wood, ash or smoke, which is why it suits apartments, complexes and busy households. Gas fireplaces come in flueless (vent-free) designs for well-ventilated rooms and balanced-flue designs that draw air from outside and suit smaller or closed rooms.

Every gas installation in South Africa must be done by a SAQCC-registered gas installer and signed off with a gas Certificate of Conformity (CoC). The CoC is required by insurers and when you sell your home. We install the appliance, cylinder or bulk connection, regulator and piping, then pressure-test and issue the certificate.

Plan the cylinder position early. LPG cylinders stand outside on a level base, at least 1 m from doors and windows and 2 m from drains and ignition sources, with an approved cage or cover. Piping runs are measured on site.

Gas fireplaces on this site start at R7,705 incl. VAT, and installation is quoted with your fireplace. We install within 200 km of Cape Town — the City, Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast — and courier anywhere in South Africa.

Indoor gas appliances also need enough ventilation, a shut-off valve within reach and an approved flexible hose of the correct length. If you are replacing an electric stove, hob or geyser, we check that the space, the cylinder route and the extraction are suitable before quoting.

Progress Group has supplied and installed fireplaces, braais and heating in the Western Cape since 1990. Visit our Bellville showroom to see units in person, or send us photos and measurements of your space for a free written quote. We confirm stock, delivery dates and every installation cost before you pay, so there are no surprises on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a gas Certificate of Conformity?

Yes. Every gas installation needs a CoC from a registered installer. Insurers ask for it, and you need it when you sell your house.

Flueless or balanced flue gas fireplace?

Flueless suits large, ventilated rooms and is easiest to install. Balanced flue draws air from outside and suits smaller or sealed rooms.

Where can the gas cylinder go?

Outside on a level base, at least 1 m from doors and windows and 2 m from drains or ignition sources, in an approved cage.

How much does a gas fireplace cost?

Gas fireplaces on our site start at R7,705 incl. VAT. Installation and piping are quoted after we confirm the cylinder position.
