What Size Fireplace Do I Need? (kW Calculator for SA Homes)

The single biggest cause of buyer's remorse we see in the showroom is fireplace sizing — usually oversizing. A 14 kW unit in a 60 m² lounge is genuinely unpleasant to sit in. Here's the calculation that keeps you comfortable.

The formula

Room volume in cubic metres × insulation factor = required watts. Divide by 1,000 to get kW.

Length (m) × Width (m) × Ceiling height (m) = volume in m³.

Multiply that volume by 40 (well-insulated modern home), 50 (typical Cape Town home) or 60 (old, draughty, high-ceilinged) to get the wattage. Divide by 1,000 for kW.

Worked examples

  • 5m × 4m × 2.7m lounge, modern build: 54 m³ × 40 = 2,160 W = 2.2 kW. A 4–5 kW unit is plenty.
  • 6m × 5m × 3m open-plan, typical Cape Town: 90 m³ × 50 = 4,500 W = 4.5 kW. A 6–8 kW unit is ideal.
  • 8m × 6m × 3.5m Victorian lounge, high ceiling: 168 m³ × 60 = 10,080 W = 10.1 kW. Target a 10–12 kW unit.

Why oversizing is worse than undersizing

An oversized fireplace forces you to burn it on low, which is where closed combustion units are least efficient and produce the most creosote. You end up with a chimney that clogs fast, glass that sooties up nightly, and a room that's uncomfortably hot within 30 minutes. A right-sized unit burns hot, clean and steady all evening.

Adjust for the rest of the house

If your lounge is fully open to a dining area or hallway, add 40% to the volume. If you're planning to heat the whole downstairs from a central fireplace, work with an installer on a whole-house heat load rather than a single-room calc — it's a different problem.
