"How much for a built-in?" is the first question every customer asks. The honest answer is R11,000 to R60,000+ — but there's a clear logic to where you'll land in that range. Here are the four line items that decide.
1. The braai unit itself (R6,000 – R35,000)
Entry-level 700mm mild steel units start around R6,000. Mid-range 800mm 304 stainless steel — the coastal-grade specification most Cape Town homes should be buying — sits between R11,000 and R18,000. Premium double-cook units with warming ovens, spits and side burners run R20,000 to R35,000.
Marine-grade 304 stainless is non-negotiable within 30 km of the coast. Mild steel rusts through in 2–3 seasons of Atlantic salt air; 304 will still look new after 10 years.
2. Hood and flue (R3,500 – R9,000)
Every built-in braai needs an insulated hood and a flue that vents through the roof. A standard 3m twin-wall stainless flue costs around R4,500 installed; runs over 5m or those requiring bends and roof penetrations push into the R7,000–R9,000 range.
3. Installation (R2,500 – R6,000)
Slotting a unit into a pre-built brick surround with an existing hole is cheap. Cutting into finished plaster, framing a new opening, or fitting a hood into a face-brick wall costs more. Our standard fitment is R3,500 including labour and materials for a straightforward job.
4. Finishing and extras (R2,000 – R10,000)
Slate or granite hearths, spice racks, grid sets, rotisserie kits and a proper storage cupboard below are where budgets stretch. None are essential, all improve daily use.

- Entry-level: R15,000 – R20,000 (700mm mild steel + basic flue + install)
- Mid-range: R22,000 – R32,000 (800mm 304 stainless + hood + flue + install)
- Premium: R40,000 – R60,000+ (double-cook stainless + full extras)
