Most people assume a proper fireplace or built-in braai is something they need to save up for — and then either buy a cheap unit that disappoints, or put the plan off for another winter. It doesn't have to work that way. At Progress Group we've supplied and installed fireplaces and braais across Cape Town, the West Coast and the Winelands since 1990, and one of the most common things customers tell us is: 'I could see the value, I just couldn't see how to pay for it all at once.' This article lays out what our products actually cost, exactly what installation adds, and how our six-month buy-now-pay-later plan spreads the cost so you're warm this winter, not next.
What a fireplace or braai really costs in Cape Town
Let's start with real numbers, not vague ranges. Our entry-level built-in braai — the 1000 De Lux double-door mild-steel unit with its 2.4 m flue kit and cyclone cowl — is R7,950 including VAT. The larger 1200 De Lux with the same kit is R8,275. On the fireplace side, the Magma 001 10kW freestanding closed-combustion unit is R11,514, and our current special bundles it with a 4 m single-storey stainless flue kit for R17,500 — the flue alone would cost you close to R6,700 bought separately.
Installation is where quotes vary wildly, so here is ours in plain terms: standard installation is R5,500 for a single storey and R8,000 for a double storey, both including one core drill. Delivery within 25 km of our Bellville showroom is R970. Add it up for the Magma 001 special — R17,500 product plus R5,500 installation plus R970 delivery — and you get R23,970, fully installed, with the price on the page before you speak to anyone.
Compare that honestly: many suppliers advertise a fireplace price and leave you to discover that a compliant flue kit, ceiling plate, cowl and labour add thousands more. Our special prices include those items precisely so the number you see is close to the number you pay.
Buy now, pay later — the six-month plan
This is the part most Cape Town fireplaces retailers don't advertise: you don't have to pay the full amount upfront. When you place an order on our site, choose 'Buy now, pay later' at the payment step and the purchase is spread over six monthly instalments through Stitch's secure checkout.
For the Magma 001 installed special, that works out to six payments of R3,995 — a warm house from the first week of winter, paid off by the time the cold is over. For the 1200 De Lux braai special at R8,275, it's six payments of R1,380 — roughly the cost of one decent weekend of takeaways per month, for a braai that will last decades.
You pay the first instalment to confirm the order, we schedule your delivery or installation as normal, and the balance follows monthly. No finance application, no credit bureau paperwork at our counter, no waiting for an approval that may never come.
- Magma 001 installed special — 6 × R3,995 per month
- 1200 De Lux braai special — 6 × R1,380 per month
- Pay with card, Capitec Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay
- Same delivery and installation schedule as an upfront order
Three ways to pay — and what each one costs
We believe pricing should be boring and predictable, so here is the full payment picture, with nothing buried in the fine print. Every price on the site includes VAT — the number you see is the number you pay for the product.
Pay by EFT and there is no surcharge at all. That's why so many of our West Coast and Winelands customers choose it: you keep the full advertised price, and where your order includes installation, we split the payment cleanly — the product and flue portion goes to Lava Fires and the labour portion to Progress Installations, both against the same order reference.
Pay online by card, Capitec Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stitch's secure checkout and a 3% processing surcharge applies — on a R17,500 order that's R525 for the convenience of paying in ten seconds. Choose buy now, pay later and a 6% surcharge applies, which is the cost of spreading six payments over the season. We show both surcharges on the payment screen before you confirm, so there are no surprises when the total appears.
- EFT — no surcharge, split between product and installation payees
- Card, Capitec Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay — 3% surcharge
- Buy now, pay later (six instalments) — 6% surcharge
Why our quotes are free — and what that's worth
Some installers charge for site assessments or 'quotes' that turn out to be sales pitches. Ours are free, no-obligation, and returned within one business day. That matters for affordability more than people realise: the difference between a flue routed through a ceiling void versus an awkward exterior run can shift your installation cost by more than a thousand rand, and you only find that out if someone actually looks at your house.
When we quote, you get the full picture — product, flue kit, installation labour, delivery — on one page, calculated the same way our checkout calculates it. If anything on site turns out to be non-standard (scaffolding, structural work, extra core drills), that's billed separately and agreed with you first, never discovered on installation day.
Five ways to make it cost less
Affordability isn't only about instalments. Here are the levers we work through with customers who are budgeting carefully:
- Collect from Bellville — you pay no delivery fee, saving R970 on an installed special
- Buy-only for builders and handymen — we supply the unit and flue kit, your builder does the fitting, and we'll spec the flue route for free
- Choose mild steel over stainless — the 1200 De Lux in mild steel is R8,275 versus R15,976 in 430 stainless; inland and covered patios don't need the upgrade
- Right-size the output — a 10kW unit heats 80–120 m²; buying a bigger fireplace than your room needs just burns more wood
- Watch the specials page — our Magma 001 and braai specials bundle the flue kit, which is the single biggest hidden cost most competitors leave out
Serving Cape Town, the West Coast and the Winelands since 1990
Thirty-five years of installing fireplaces and braais has taught us one thing about affordability: the cheapest quote almost always ends up the most expensive. A R2,000 saving on installation that leaves you with a leaking flue, a smoking room or an insurance claim that's refused is no saving at all. Every unit we supply is installed by our own team to SANS 10400-T, with gas work certified by a licensed practitioner.
We deliver and install across the Cape Flats and Northern Suburbs, up the West Coast through Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, Langebaan and Saldanha, and into the Winelands — Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington and Worcester. Wherever you are, the instalment plan and the free quote work the same.
Come and see it burning in Bellville
The best way to judge value is in person. Our showroom at 189 Durban Road, Bellville has fireplaces and braais lit and set up, so you can feel the heat output, check the build quality and compare finishes — then we can price your exact setup on the spot, including the six-month plan.
