It's a fair question — a wood stove looks like something you should be able to plonk down and light. The reality in South Africa is more nuanced. Here's what you can legally and safely do yourself, and where a certified installer isn't optional.
What you CAN do yourself
- Position a freestanding wood-burning stove on a non-combustible hearth.
- Assemble the stove, fit door handles, level it on adjustable feet.
- Fit a heat shield to a nearby wall if clearances allow.
- Load, light and maintain the fire (obviously).
What you CANNOT legally do yourself
- Install or penetrate a flue through a roof or ceiling — SANS 10400 Part V requires certified installation, and your home insurance will likely be void without a compliance certificate.
- Connect any gas fireplace or gas braai to a bottle or reticulated line — this requires a LPGSA-registered installer and a Certificate of Conformity (COC).
- Cut into a masonry chimney to fit a closed combustion insert — structural and flue compliance is required.
Why the flue is the critical part
A poorly installed flue is the single most common cause of house fires related to fireplaces. Insufficient clearance from combustibles (rafters, ceiling boards, thatch), incorrect twin-wall specification, or joints not properly sealed will fail — usually 2–3 years in, once creosote has built up and a hot fire ignites it.
A certified installer sizes the flue for your unit's kW output, uses insulated twin-wall through combustible zones, seals every joint, issues a COC and photographs the install for your insurer. That paperwork is what turns a fire-risk into a covered loss if anything goes wrong.
Cost of getting a pro in
A certified installation of a standard closed combustion unit with a 3m flue runs R6,500–R9,000 in the Western Cape. Given the unit itself is often R15,000+, the installation is 30–40% of total cost — and the only line item that keeps your insurance valid. It's not the place to save R7,000.
