Outdoor living guide
Braais for the West Coast & Cape Winelands.
A braai is more than a cooking tool in the Western Cape — it is the centre of outdoor living. Whether you are building a new entertainment area in Stellenbosch, upgrading a beach house in Langebaan or adding a patio kitchen in Paarl, the right braai makes all the difference.

Built-in, gas or portable?
The best braai depends on how often you cook outside, the space you have and how much control you want over heat. Here is how the three main types compare for homes along the West Coast and in the Cape Winelands.
Built-in wood and charcoal braais
Built-in braais are the classic choice for permanent outdoor kitchens. Steel built-in units handle high heat and heavy use, while brick-and-steel installations can be customised to match your patio. In coastal areas, choose 304-grade stainless steel or a properly coated mild-steel unit to resist salt corrosion.
Gas braais
Gas braais fire up instantly and offer precise temperature control — ideal for weeknight dinners and entertaining guests in the Winelands. They produce less smoke than wood or charcoal, which is useful in estates with fire restrictions. Always have a licensed gas practitioner connect the unit and issue a compliance certificate.
Portable braais
Portable kettle and barrel braais are perfect for camping trips along the West Coast, beach days and smaller patios. They are affordable, easy to store and travel well. Look for units with adjustable air vents and sturdy legs that will not sink into soft sand.

Weatherproofing your braai area
The Cape climate is tough on outdoor appliances. Coastal salt air rusts mild steel quickly, and strong southeaster winds can blow ash and embers around inland patios. Plan your installation with these points in mind:
- Position the braai out of the direct path of prevailing winds
- Use a stainless-steel or powder-coated finish within 5 km of the coast
- Install a canopy or partial roof to protect the unit and the cook
- Allow adequate ventilation and clearance from timber pergolas and awnings
- Store portable braais under cover when not in use
Fuel choices in the Western Cape
Hardwoods such as rooikrans and sekelbos are widely available and give an authentic smoky flavour. Charcoal lights faster and burns evenly, making it convenient for gas-and- charcoal combo braais. LPG is clean and controllable, and natural gas is economical if your property already has a piped supply. For pellet smokers and grills, check that pellets are stocked locally before committing.

Accessories that complete the setup
A great braai area needs more than just the firebox. Consider adding a rotisserie for whole chickens and lamb, a pizza oven insert for family nights, a sturdy cover for winter protection, and quality tongs, grids and brushes. Storage drawers and side tables keep fuel, utensils and spices within arm's reach.
