A braai is one of those purchases where the wrong choice becomes obvious three months in — smoke pooling on the patio, a lid that rusted through, or a freestanding unit blown over in the first southeaster. Before you spend the money, work through the four decisions below.
1. Space and permanence
Built-in braais assume you own the property and plan to stay. They anchor the entertainment area, they lift resale value, and they let you match brickwork or cladding to the rest of the home. Freestanding braais suit renters, sectional-title patios, and anyone who might rearrange the layout in a year or two.
As a rule: if you would take the braai with you when you move, choose freestanding. If it's part of the house, build it in.
2. Flue and smoke management
- Built-in braais need a proper flue (usually 200 mm insulated) that clears the roofline by 600 mm — non-negotiable in Cape Town's wind.
- Freestanding units either vent through an existing chimney or rely on outdoor airflow; covered patios still need a hood or extractor.
- Undersized flues are the #1 cause of smoke-back complaints. Never economise here.
3. Cost, honestly
A quality stainless steel built-in firebox lands between R12,000 and R28,000 for the unit alone. Add the flue kit (R3,500–R8,000), brickwork or cladding, and installation labour and you're realistically at R25,000–R60,000 all-in for a mid-range built-in braai in a new patio.
Freestanding braais start around R3,500 for a portable and R9,000–R18,000 for a heavy-duty patio unit — installation-free, delivered ready to use.
4. Materials that survive Western Cape weather
Coastal air punishes everything. Marine-grade 304 stainless steel is worth the premium anywhere within 20 km of the sea — mild steel with paint will bubble and rust within two summers. Inland (Winelands, Breede Valley) mild steel is fine if kept under cover.
